From Study & Play to PCDA

Overview
The Pre College Developmental Academy (PCDA) represents a standout example of vision, collaboration, and long-term player development. Originally conceptualized and launched under the Challenger Sports brand as part of the Study & Play initiative, this concept has evolved into a leading academy experience, thanks to the forward-thinking leadership of Ryan Hodgson. My role in co-developing and launching the original platform laid the foundation for what would later become PCDA — a transformational program preparing players for the demands of college-level soccer and beyond.
The Original Concept: Study & Play
While serving as a senior executive at Challenger Sports, I led the expansion of our Study & Play programs, which aimed to provide high school-aged athletes with elite-level training and academic support as a bridge to college soccer. The program stood out by combining European-style developmental philosophy with a U.S. college-prep curriculum, delivered in a structured, academy-style environment.

- Led the go-to-market strategy and commercial model.
- Partnered with elite coaches to shape a professionalized training experience.
- Oversaw brand development and initial recruitment model across North America.
- Positioned the program as a stepping stone for collegiate recruitment and scholarship pathways.
The Evolution: Ryan Hodgson and the Birth of PCDA
Ryan Hodgson was a key figure in bringing the Study & Play concept to life, serving as a hands-on director and technical leader within the program. Recognizing the opportunity to scale the model independently, Ryan launched PCDA — a new brand built on the same foundational values but expanded in scope, quality, and vision.
Under Ryan’s leadership, PCDA has:
- Developed a highly structured, immersive, full-time academy environment.
- Created a year-round platform for player growth, focusing on physical, tactical, and mental preparation.
- Built a strong pipeline to collegiate programs through exposure, coaching, and player development.
- Established a unique brand identity that resonates with both domestic and international athletes.
My Ongoing Support and Relationship
Though PCDA has grown into a standalone brand, my relationship with Ryan and the academy remains strong. I’ve continued to offer advisory support and remain a champion of the platform’s vision — leveraging my experience in sports development and commercial strategy to help guide long-term planning, marketing, and strategic growth opportunities.
This collaboration highlights the power of shared vision, long-term partnerships, and a commitment to evolving with the athlete in mind. From a Challenger Sports initiative to a standalone national academy brand, PCDA is a perfect example of what happens when innovation and execution align.
